CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The kitchen is quiet. Dad’s upstairs reading to Josh. James is in the shower. Brian and Samantha are sitting outside by the slowly dying fire.

Mom’s at the counter, flipping through a book. Her hair falls out of her “work bun” in big pieces. She still looks nice. I wonder if she was a Rebekah when she was in school. Mom says she was shy, but I also know she was in the homecoming court.

I slip onto a stool near the fridge, wanting to ask Mom something, but not really sure how to ask it.

“Hey, sweetie,” Mom says, closing her book but keeping her finger inside to hold her place. “I didn’t get to ask you about class. Anyone you know there?”

“Just this one girl. Seen her at the pool a few times.”

“That’s nice. You and Will have any jobs lined up the rest of the week?”

“No. Not until Monday.” I wait because I’m not sure how to ask if she’ll take me to buy a new bathing suit. “Can we go to the store tomorrow?”

“Yeah. Getting groceries is at the top of my list. What do you need?”

“Not groceries. I need a new bathing suit.”

“Oh.” Mom closes her book all the way and sets it next to the coffee machine. She pulls back the stool next to me and sits on it. Her knees are facing mine. “What’s wrong with your suit?”

“Nothing. I kind of want something a little… different.”

Mom nods. She keeps her eyes on me, which is how I can see them dart all over my face. I swear she thinks she can read minds sometimes.

Finally she pats my knee and straightens her back. “Sure. The boys have a game in the afternoon. We can head out before that.”
